NJ Local Shelters and Recues

Paula N Ashfield is the Founder and Director of Under My Wing Avian Refuge. In 2005 Paula and her husband Scott, Co-founder and Vice President began devoting their life’s to rescue and shelter Exotic Birds. Continuing through many levels of growth, Under My Wing has established the 1st Nonprofit Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Sussex County, New Jersey. Together they have bird's best interest at heart.

Under my Wing has established trustworthy relations and are highly recommended by businesses and individuals as “A vacation place for birds”.

Over the last few years numerous Exotic Birds who were previously kept in dark garages, closets and basements due to their loud screaming or biting were entrusted to be cared for by the Ashfield's. Without hesitation the Ashfield's moved to a larger place so they would have more room for the newcomers as they quickly had an addition of 65 birds by the end of 2007. Although some have been adopted and others are adoptable at present, Under My Wing Avian Refuge is filled with over 100 birds that are physically challenged or have severe issues are to remain at the sanctuary permanently.

Under My Wing is currently seeking a permanent building for the birds.

Like the birds, the Ashfield’s have experienced a great deal of change and growing pains. Assuming that is the one thing they have in common which allows them to do what they do. They can relate! Through a great deal of effort and research they have learned all about different birds and first aid techniques to assist birds in many different reasons, behavioral modifications, proper diets and the importance of sound Veterinary care.

Under My Wing Avian Refuge priority and focus is the bird's well being. However, Under My Wing Avian Refuge is unique because they believe and suggest that communication with a grieving bird owner can help both their healing process no matter the reason of separation. They offer extensional services to the birds as well as the birds owners instead of just taking in a bird.

Under My Wing Avian Refuge has formed relationships, has educated and counseled with understanding and compassion to private and public schools and individuals who care to have knowledge how to truly care for parrots. Their programs and community service allows other bird shelters, parrots and bird owners all across United States to benefit from their mission.

Paula and Scott love all animals and cares for their well being and unlike other rescues and shelters who expend their care giving toward many different types of animals in one location they believe that birds should not be homed with other animals in a sanctuary setting but given total and complete care to the one type will benefit the birds in shelters.

Under My Wing Avian Refuge has many adoptable birds and is seeking only the best for the birds that have been entrusted to their care. Therefore, making decisions in the placement of birds to a new home is a careful, well monitored and time consuming step which will benefit the long term life and care of these adopted birds.

As you will continue browsing our pages, you will discover just how intense the love, care and attention to the birds need is and in every detail about this sanctuary because the importance of its existence is paramount to the parrot's life’s and well being.
